Keep reading as we explore the illustrious history of Tiffany & Co., discuss their most popular collections and show you how to buy real Tiffany & Co. jewelry at fantastic prices.

History of Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany & Co. was founded in 1837 by 25-year-old Charles Lewis Tiffany and business partner John B. Young. With a $1,000 contribution from Tiffany’s father, the two sold stationery and fancy goods in New York City. Their store quickly became a favorite among stylish women of the day. Tiffany & Co. established themselves with their clean American jewelry style that departed from Europe’s overly lavish and Victorian designs.

Charles Tiffany traveled the world in search of extraordinary gemstones which he brought back to America for his clients to enjoy. In 1878, Charles Tiffany acquired one of the world’s largest fancy yellow diamonds: a 128.52 ct stone., named the Tiffany Diamond. After buying one third of the French Crown jewels in 1887, he earned himself the nickname “The King of Diamonds”. Tiffany’s moniker is truly fitting as they introduced high society to new gemstones such as kunzite in 1902, morganite in 1920 and tanzanite in 1967.

Tiffany & Co.’s little blue boxes are just as coveted as their jewelry. Made in their signature blue, referred to as robin’s egg blue, forget-me-not blue and 1837 Blue (for their founding year), their jewelry boxes are immediately recognizable. Since Tiffany & Co.’s inception, people have tried to buy their trademarked boxes, but no matter the amount, Charles Tiffany always refused. Tiffany famously said that he would give anyone a Tiffany & Co. box, as long as they bought a piece of jewelry to put in it.

One of Tiffany & Co.’s greatest achievements and most iconic designs dates back to 1886, when they revolutionized the engagement ring with the Tiffany Setting. Previously, all engagement rings were bezel set, with only the top of the diamond visible. Charles Tiffany reimagined the traditional engagement ring setting to fully showcase a diamond’s beauty. The Tiffany Setting holds the diamond in six prongs elevating the stone above the band, allowing more light to enter the diamond and sparkle wonderfully.

Tiffany & Co. Style

Tiffany & Co. has adorned the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, and recently Lady Gaga who wore the magnificent fancy yellow 128.52 ct. Tiffany Diamond as a necklace during the Oscars. From their affordable sterling silver jewelry, to decadent diamonds and collections by iconic designers such as Elsa Peretti and Jean Schlumberger, there is Tiffany jewelry to suit everyone’s needs. A versatile but classic brand, TIffany has succeeded in creating modern yet timeless pieces since the 1800s.

How to spot fake Tiffany & Co. jewelry

As one of the most revered luxury brands in the world, there is plenty of counterfeit Tiffany & Co. jewelry on the market. So how to spot a fake Tiffany piece from a real Tiffany piece?

Here are our tips for spotting fake Tiffany & Co. jewelry:

  • Authentic Tiffany jewelry will feel heavier than fakes because they are made with genuine materials such as sterling silver and 18k gold.
  • Real Tiffany jewelry will be stamped with the brand’s logo. The printing will always be centered, sharp and free from misspellings. Fakes may have the “and” spelled out.
  • Only four names have been stamped onto Tiffany & Co. jewelry: Elsa Peretti, Paloma Picasso, Jean Schlumberger and Frank Gehry. The designers’ names will be printed on their respective collections.
  • Genuine Tiffany & Co. jewelry will always be stamped with their respective metal type. Sterling silver will be stamped with 925, 18k gold with 750 and platinum with 950.
  • Tiffany only uses truly exceptional diamonds, so jewelry with low quality diamonds are unlikely to be authentic. And gemstones will always be perfectly sized and color matched.
  • In 2004, Tiffany & Co. began laser engraving their diamonds with a serial number.
  • Counterfeiters may use a real Tiffany & Co. setting but swap the diamond.
  • Tiffany & Co.’s jewelry with links will always be completely soldered.
  • Fake Tiffany & Co. jewelry will have the links pinched together with a clear line where the link is separated.
  • And finally, Tiffany’s packaging will always be in their signature Tiffany Blue box with their logo perfectly printed. Certain jewelry may also come in a Tiffany Blue pouch, also featuring their logo.
