Top Picks: Limited Edition Louis Vuitton Bags

There is a special feeling associated with getting your hands on a limited edition bag, especially if it’s Louis Vuitton. These are some of the best limited edition bags from the French fashion house.

Warning: Your designer bag wish list is about to get even longer.

While it used to be a case of ‘you snooze you lose’ when it came to limited edition designer bags, it is now easier than ever to shop accessories from past collections. Prior to online luxury resale, it would’ve taken a lot of vintage boutique shopping trips to be in the chance of coming across a limited edition style you had missed out on.

Louis Vuitton never fails to impress with its limited edition releases. With a number of impressive collaborations under its belt, there are too many limited edition bags to mention. However, these are some of our favorites.

    What Is 'Limited Edition'?

‘Limited’ refers to something that is restricted, particularly in size, quantity, or the extent. ‘Edition’ means the specific version of an item, whether that is a book or a bag.

So, when it comes to designer goods, a limited edition product is one that was only produced for a short period of time and in a somewhat smaller quantity than usual.

This might refer to a seasonal bag that was only produced for a single season. Or, it could be a collaboration which resulted in a series of products made over a period of time.

The appeal of limited edition bags is that they are extremely unlikely to be manufactured ever again (apart from reissued styles). Therefore the chance of sourcing one is somewhat difficult. The positive news is that the online luxury resale market makes your chances of finding your dream limited edition bag much more favorable. The pure joy when you do find it is just as strong, too.

    1. Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami

The LV x Takashi Murakami collaboration began in 2002, while Marc Jacobs was at the helm of Louis Vuitton. Takashi Murakami is a contemporary artist based in Japan, known for his creative and colorful designs.

The first design from this partnership, Murakami took the classic monogram and reimagined it in a multicolor iteration. A number of other collections were released over the years, such as Cerises in 2005 and Cosmic Blossom in 2010. The collaboration ran all the way up to 2015, making it Louis Vuitton’s longest partnership.

    2. Louis Vuitton x Supreme

There was a time when Supreme was the name on everyone’s lips. The collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Supreme was a tongue-in-cheek moment for luxury fashion. Back in the year 2000, Louis Vuitton actually issued Supreme a cease and desist for using and altering the LV logo.

It wasn’t until 17 years later that Kim Jones, the menswear director at the time, showcased a collaboration between the two fashion brands. This was an early example of luxury brands working alongside streetwear brands, which would have been unthinkable a few years prior. The collection is still highly collectible years later.

    3. Louis Vuitton x Stephen Sprouse

The fashion designer and artist Stephen Sprouse was responsible for the graffiti-print bags from his 2001 collection with Louis Vuitton. The bags featured graffiti logo lettering over Louis Vuitton’s classic monogram pattern.

The collaboration was considered avant-garde and daring, and it paved the way for the likes of the Supreme collaboration. The best-selling styles from the partnership were reissued in 2009.

    4. Louis Vuitton Raffia Capucines

A more recent offering from Louis Vuitton, this bag was not part of a collaboration but is a limited-edition seasonal design. The Capucines bag was released in 2013 and has been refreshed seasonally in different colorways and materials. This summery version is made from raffia and trimmed with brown leather for a sleek finish.

    5. Louis Vuitton Monogram Mirror Coated Sac Plat

Released in 2021, the silver Mirror Coated Sac Plat was a harkback to an earlier design. The bag pays tribute to a previous style from 2007, during the Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton era. Virgil Abloh’s take on the archival design was tweaked for a contemporary outlook.
